The made up example

Northside Family Center is applying for $75,000 to run an after school tutoring program for 90 students. The organization, the students, and every number below were invented for this sample.

Sample need statement

In our county, 41 percent of fourth graders read below grade level, and the three schools nearest our building have no after school tutoring. Families tell us the barrier is transportation and cost, not interest. Last year 62 students asked for a spot in a program that had room for 30.

Sample plan

We will run tutoring four afternoons a week for 32 weeks, serving 90 students in groups of 6. Two certified teachers will lead sessions, supported by 6 trained volunteers. A van route will pick students up from three schools at 3:30 p.m.

We will track attendance weekly, reading level at the start and end of the year for every student, and report both to the funder each quarter. Our goal is that 70 percent of students who attend at least 20 sessions gain one reading level.
